What is the difference between this AI solution and other free plugins available?
The free plugins available are a step in the right direction for accessibility, but really do not make the websites themselves much more compliant. The premium Userway AI-driven tool can actually identify and allow American Creative to easily modify tags, page headings, form labels, questionable titles and much more. It will also continue to adjust new content that may be added by us or your team along the way. This makes the site more accessible for those with tools that require them to be presented with specific coding, thus making the site more compliant.
Is the ADA targeting small businesses?
Technically, the ADA isn't targeting anyone. However, there are law firms that are now seeking out websites, often small businesses, and quickly running a scan and threating legal action for non-compliance. These often require settlement to avoid trial. In most cases, the Userway AI solution will deter these attacks, or can have a claim dropped entirely with their help in proving best-efforts to be compliant.
Do I have to do this?
No, however, we want your website to be accessible and we don’t want your business to be at risk. We believe it is in the best interest of most of our clients to use this continuous compliance solution. That’s why we’ve added this proactively to your website. Why isn’t my website already ADA compliant?
It may technically be compliant, or it may not – the guidelines as to what makes a website ‘compliant’ is incredibly subjective, making it very easy for someone to find items that qualify as violations and issue a lawsuit. Your site may be fully accessible, but have an image where the contrast ratio doesn’t quite comply with the requirements, or have a blog posts where the headings may be set a particular way for style, but causes a warning for screen readers. Using this solution, we can easily and quickly ensure your website complies with standard accessibility tools, giving you the best chance of avoiding any litigation and making the site more accessible. To manually remediate or build a ‘fully-compliant’ site can often cost more than the website itself.
What are some of the technical items that make a site compliant?
Some of the items we have manually addressed on a few websites include: Clear language definition in the html tags; clear label of 'main' content with proper tags; when there are multiple instances of the same type of tag, for example a nav tag in the header and footer, each should contain a unique ARIA label; Headings must always go in order, from h1 through h6, without skipping any number, only going down or up by one number.; All links within text should be either styled with an underline or styled like buttons; Ensure that all content can be accessed with the keyboard alone (tab key), to navigation through all page links IN ORDER.; Banner Sliders/Carousels/Animations must follow specific control and pause guidelines; Graphics and elements must be at a contrast ratio of 3:1.
